Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve & Garden

The climate of the big island of Hawaii is diverse. Parts of it are a desert and other parts of it are very wet. On the wet part of the island you can find tropical rainforests. It is here that this bioreserve was located. There are over 2500 species of rate and endangered plants from around the world and it was definitely worth a visit! As you walk along cascading waterfalls you can see a variety of fruits, flowers, and trees that we do not have in New York. There were only two plants I could identify on my own (pineapple plant and pitcher plant) but I did learn quite a bit about other plants!

Other Stuff

Spending two weeks on the big island left plenty of time to explore many other parts of the island. We visited the Lavaloha Chocolate Farm, Greenwell Farms coffee plantation, Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Farm, two lava tubes, Waipio, Polulu, Akaka Falls, a few other waterfalls and some historic sites. There were some short but nice hikes and some informative tours. Lava tree state monument brought back memories of the Gilboa trees that are so dear to me. The Hawaii fossils are much younger and the molds were caused by lava and the Gilboa fossils are very old with molds caused by sand. I’d recommend checking out these trees if you do visit the big island!
